I thought "Haute Tension" was pretty awesome, even with the twist ending.Hills Have Eyes was just gore eye-candy.The dad getting burnt was cool though. I also thought it stunk when they played the "hero music" for the main guy that survives.Anyone seen the second? Pure TRIPE! I think "tripe" means shit but not sure...

Is it cool to just say "High Tension"? I've heard it being referred to as both.

Haute Tension... I think I've already said here how much I hate that piece of shit. So, I don't want anyone doing 160's going, "huh?" Everytime I've ever mentioned that movie, I slammed it. So, no spinning heads!
One of my biggest problems with that movie is the way it was edited. Usually my biggest problem with any horror movie is dialogue, annoying characters, and sleazy stuff that just is really insulting to the viewer's intelligence. But this movie's editing alone pissed me off. I don't know why. It just didn't work for me.
Now maybe that has something to do with the way the movie was shot. Because I didn't like that either.
When I watched this movie for the first time (yes, in French, the Uncut version, and Widescreen - I did everything the way I was supposed to), I assumed the beginning was leading up to something. And now, except for the scene where the family is murdered, which I didn't like anyway... this movie goes nowhere, says nothing, and ultimately is just a sleazy piece of shit. The style was cliched, the shots were ugly and uninteresting... I've seen it done before in better movies.
Another note - I'm 99% sure the filmmaker didn't want people to think the movie was "awesome." It's supposed to be disturbing. Which is of course why, the director brutually kills off completely innocent people and makes the killer a sexually frustrated lesbian. There is nothing "awesome" about that. It's not done to heavy metal music. It's not supposed to be fun.
Anyway - that's my story and I'm sticking to it. And it's pretty much all I have to say about that movie.

I give it points for being somewhat different at the time it was released. That twist was pretty stupid but *gold star* for graphic kills and gore.

I think I have to agree with Laz on this one...................It didn't seem like this movie had much of a point to it. I guess I can see why some people would like it, but I'm not one of those people.

Don't tell me I burst your bubble. Deep down, everyone knows this movie's trash. Besides, France is having a revolution in horror but almost all the films suck. Calvaire and Irreversible are two lesser examples of exploitation sleaze horror that are acquired tastes to say the least. Somehow, this little piggie managed to squeeze away from the herd and get people to take it seriously. Don't ask me why. But really, look at the set-up: girl watches girl take shower, guy plays with himself with decapitated head, girl masturbates, and guy kidnaps girl and takes her into the woods... Everyone says the twist sucks, but without that twist- the movie wouldn't mean anything. Which is why I've always said the whole thing is tainted. That twist wasn't a last minute thought. They actually planned it from the very beginning and didn't know how to sort out one fake killer from their real killer. Which of course makes her look like a perverted freak. Which in itself is dangerously close to gay-bashing. Somewhere along the line, this movie squandered whatever it could have been. But really, the twist is to blame? Yeah right. Without it, it would just be another crazy guy brutally kills people and kidnaps a girl. Been done before a thousand times.

Maybe the guy was the "killer-girl"s father. It was stupid to show her trying to plug the phone in or hiding in the bathroom.Totally ripped off the audience. Not too original but at least foreign. What hasn't been milked to death lately?

Hollywood has also ruined"long,dark-haired ghost people" as well. Asian movies kick ass but are not translated well to a Western movie. Sam Raimi needs to come up with his own shit instead of buying then copying Asian ideas. I'm sure the "Evil Dead" creator can come up with something...

Well, he's not directing these movies. That's why he's okay letting other people direct crappy movies. Besides... he made the Spiderman movies. He's into making big bucks.
