I hate Meet the Feebles. Way too gross.
Battle Royale... Has that gotten a Region 1 release yet? Not that I have any kind of genuine desire to see it. However, if it shows up on my On-Demand list, I'll make sure to watch it.

I just went online and bought Basket Case (was thinking of you Laz!), Street Trash, Ichi the killer (special edition) and Thriller: A Cruel Picture. So stoked...

As well you should be. Basket Case is quite good, Ichi the Killer is excellent. I haven't seen Street Trash yet. But I saw a clip on YouTube and... it looks a little better-made than I assumed when I read all the reviews about it. I might look into picking it up soon (if I can get it cheap enough).

Basket Case is brilliant! Thunderbird straight up in a paper cup for this cheaply made, yet beautiful, story of sibling rivalry!

I didn't like that aspect of the film. The stuff I liked was the stuff with the doctors, naturally the death scenes, the scenes with the receptionist (I forget her character's name), the scenes showing their family life, and the scenes showing the weird tenants in the apartment building. The music / score was excellent. Loved that. But my problem with the movie was Belial and his sexual... well, even the fact that he was sexual bothered me. It's like a nastier version of having to always keep your dog from humping peoples' legs.

Yes. All of that is great, but the sibling rivalry is the crux of the film.
Belial's sexuality was deeply disturbing, and sad, on so many levels.

Yes. All of that is great, but the sibling rivalry is the crux of the film. That's just creepy. And to me, it was creepy in the wrong kinda way. Belial's sexuality was deeply disturbing, and sad, on so many levels. Oh dear. You may have just uncovered one of my biggest weaknesses as a Horror movie viewer - I don't feel sadness for bad characters in horror. Ever. And I'm not talking Carrie. I'm talking movies where I already feel they've unfairly made the ugly, fat, deformed, gay, poor, etc. person the monster, but then made them so completely dispicable - only a crazy person would feel sorry for them. This is probably chief among the reasons I hate Maniac. But, I believe Basket Case's Belial, lots of gangs and scuzzoids in horror - Devil's Rejects, Near Dark, etc. That they fit into that category as well. I'm incapable of feeling sad or bad for them. But it's the movie that decides I have to feel that way.

Despicable? If you thought that Belial was despicable, then I feel like maybe we were watching two different movies. He was angry, confused and jealous. With an IQ barely above that of a frightened animal, I certainly don't think that I would personally call that despicable.

He may have been all those things, but this movie is not a serious portrait of a deformed person who has a hard life and has to overcome diversity to... This is a schlock low-budget monster / slasher film about a mound of mud who kills and rapes people.

I will agree that it is not a realistic portrayal of a deformed person trying to make his way in life. That's not what horror movies are about. They are exaggerations of real life to make a point. That is exactly what Frank Henenlotter did in this film. It is not meant to be taken seriously. It is a hyperbole.... Which is a literary device used to make a point. Who would even consider taking this film in a serious light?

It was super cheap, and I like to give every movie a chance. Okay. I know there have been times when people were people have raised an eyebrow at my DVD purchases. I've knowingly bought not-good movies too, just for the curiosity. But the movie itself is really not good. It's a real poser. It seems that it's about how teen culture of the '90s alienates girls that are not beautiful and shallow. But the writer has no idea what he / she's doing. And it copies far too many things from the first film. It's a remake but pretending it's a sequel. I'm not kidding - they keep the Sue character from the first film grown up but having flashbacks to the first movie.
