Not many 80's horror-comedy-action etc movies featured redneck, hillbilly, flanel-shirt wearing main characters.
but many had "men in rubber suit monsters" and non cgi effects

Many? It's been awhile since I've seen Swamp Thing, but I guess you could call Pumpkinhead's "suit" rubber. But it was completely form-fitting. It didn't look like a suit or costume. It looked real. Same with Tarman from Return of the Living Dead. The Killer Klown costumes - well the budget was low, so of course some of the padding looks like padding. But the heads looked completely real. Again, maybe some kind of rubber. But... The effect was more important than the look and each complented the other.
Did the "rubber suits" in Jack look obviously fake? Or kind of real?
Anyway, you look at one detail you have a point. But just because a few things are throwing back to older movies doesn't mean this JBMS movie can re-capture the feel. And that's what allows a person to say it has "80s' cheese." I assume you meant it feels like the 80's. And I sincerely doubt that. Mostly because it's impossible. I know that. People making these things are afraid to sell them as 80's.
Did you ever see Hatchet? I have a short memory and that movie hasn't been mentioned here in awhile. Just hearing THE HORROR DEBATE talk about it makes it obvious that it doesn't feel like the 80's at all.

i think you are looking way to much into this, all i meant was it had an 80's feel to it or atleast more then many other movies that i have seen in a long time, im sure no movie will ever perfectly recapture the 80's feel, thats hard to do and most movies dont even try
yes i saw hatchet, i dont think it felt like an 80's movie, felt like what it was a modern slasher, it was decent but not nearly as good as it was hyped to be
as for me i just watched this new movie called dead wood, terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible movie, moved at a snails pace and nothing happened in it, everyone involved in this movie shouldbe ashamed

It's a very good movie. Now, it's more than fair to deduct just a star because a lot of people obviously would watch a movie like this and go - WTF? Because, there are only 2 Normal People in the whole movie. Everyone else is either wealthy, famous, or so into the College Scene that they don't relate to Normal People. So, this movie won't speak your language. It doesn't speak my language either - most of the time. But it is smart and a good watch. And, it's good for that 90's new breed of Hollywood movie. I think you know what breed I mean. The cultured, sophisticated, classy, semi-independent Hollywood movie that the town still makes every now and then just to rake in awards. Goddamn, this movie is pretentious! What makes me so sick (actually, there is a list) is that this movie is about obsession... But who is supposed to be obsessed with who? You see boys spying on girls having sex and boys talking about trying to watch girls changing through their windows... but the ultra-pretentious narration says the girls were obsessed with the boys. This is basically a movie where whatever gives straight guys a hard-on is treated with that "Coming of Age" kind of preciousness and passionate nostalgia. Give me a fucking break! This coming from a female director of all people makes me want to puke. The female characters are underwritten and overplayed. Try figuring out why they act the way they act. Or, worse yet, considering how Fanatical Conservative the mother is, driving her daughers to commit suicide... but suddenly, she is the only person who comes to their defense when they want to save the trees from getting sawed down. This is Manipulative Drama at its' most shameful. However, as a Music-Video, this movie is not so bad. The rating is reflective of the very good soundtrack, camerawork and style, and... surprisingly, Kirsten Dunst does a great job here as the only sister with any real kind of story. Gee, what a surprise since she was the marketable young one in the cast and did Bring It On the next year... Old movies are... interesting to watch again, aren't they? Most people who go to shit like Will Ferrell movies would probably turn this off after watching just 3 minutes of it. It's really old. What does that mean, exactly? That means I think a lot of people will laugh, unintentionally. And it's hard to like most of the main characters in this movie. Especially Joe. Who is a judgmental heel of a guy, pities everyone, thinks he's great, uses and judges people, and is always writing in his head what he thinks about everyone he meets. Needless to say, he's a hack as a writer. But this is a kind of horror movie about a monster-like woman who terrorizes him because he's poor and needs the stuff she gives him. He's trapped with no way out and even though she's a washed up movie star, she has everything and he has nothing. Kind of like payback for him being such a jerk. It's also funny that this movie brings attention to the Kept Man phenomenon- where rich women pay to give a younger man anything he wants if he'll be her arm-candy. And he is a serious hunk so... it's cool to see her in the position of power. Of course, this is supposed to be the 1940's, so we never know if he ever gave her sex. But he did do a little skip when he got out of the pool, so he must have subconsciously enjoyed some of it. In the end, the movie is silly, but it's dark enough to accept it for what it wants to be. Gothic and amusingly creepy. And it's hard not to like the Betty Shafer character. So, at least one person in this movie doesn't suck. i think you are looking way to much into this, all i meant was it had an 80's feel to it or atleast more then many other movies that i have seen in a long time, im sure no movie will ever perfectly recapture the 80's feel, thats hard to do and most movies dont even try yes i saw hatchet, i dont think it felt like an 80's movie, felt like what it was a modern slasher, it was decent but not nearly as good as it was hyped to be Well everyone knows the 80's were a great decade and I don't like NEW horror movies trying to wish it were that. And the last thing a new horror movie could ever have is "80's cheese." It's just flat out impossible.

well the 80's to me were the best years of horror like i have said, so when a movie reminds me of the 80's even just a little bit thats a good thing to me
Simon Says- a new slasher with crispin glover as the killer, was OK, he played a good if annoying crazy guy, had some good gore, a entertaining way to kill an hour and a half
Parents (1989)- This one had a really good plot and idea it just moved to slow and took to long for everything to happen, was still ok tho

well the 80's to me were the best years of horror like i have said, so when a movie reminds me of the 80's even just a little bit thats a good thing to me 80's Revival, I guess it could be called. Just like all the remakes and movies like Wrong Turn are Wannabe-70's Revival. I don't know which "trend" bothers me more. Simon Says- a new slasher with crispin glover as the killer, was OK, he played a good if annoying crazy guy, had some good gore, a entertaining way to kill an hour and a half Parents (1989)- This one had a really good plot and idea it just moved to slow and took to long for everything to happen, was still ok tho Parents, which I haven't seen yet, is supposed to be a satire. Any satire has its' roots in story and dialogue - not gore or the kind of dumb freaky stuff that get people these days to turn their heads. But then, the critics didn't really like it either, so you're probably on the right track.

the story could have been good, but like i said it happened way to slow, the dialogue was whatever, randy quaid was actually very good in it tho, very slow movie story and a not so great ending, it just didnt work for me, this is actually a movie they should remake except change things about it, although then i guess it wouldnt be a remake but you get my point

The last movies I watched were Confessions Of A Shopaholic and an old movie called Are You In The House Alone, which started off as a pretty good thriller and then segued into Lifetime Movie territory halfway through. It was still pretty good though.

I agree, the revenge scenes were a let-down. Nothing can beat some of the original ones. I recently discovered a channel I didn't know I had called ThisTv, and they show a lot of older horror movies that I've been recording on my DVR. Last night I watched one called Whoever Slew Auntie Roo, starring Shelley Winters, that I'd only heard of but never seen. It was pretty awesome.

Intruder with Sam Raimi & Ted Raimi. the movie really sucked but the cheesy 80s vibe is classic. also why is ted raimi always listening to the same song?! in like 10 different scenes!

Watched a few tonight:
The Attic Expeditions (steaming pile of shit, and confusing shit at that...only thing that halfway saved it was Seth Green)
Dark Mirror (pretty good time-waster)

sams lake- about a bunch of teens who go up to a cabin and a killer is on the loose
yea we have seen this formula a million times, this one had a GREAT twsit a little over halfway through that really surprised the hell out of me and threw the movie in a whole new direction, sadly tho as a whole it was pretty boring and all the kill s were offscreen, they wasted a great twist on a dull movie

Just watched "Fright Night" on the Scream channel today. I had totally forgotten how much fun that movie is. I also forgot that Amanda Bearse was the female lead. What happened to her between this and "Married With Children"? Some surprisingly decent special effects too. The plot is fun, although the script could have used some work. And Roddy MacDowell. I think I like him more than his brother, Malcolm. Thoughts?
