Technically, SNL was funnier. But I don't really watch it anymore. It stopped being funny the more stoner-humor they tried to work into the show. Mad TV is rarely funny at all, though. So, I'm going with SNL.

Well, I'm going to have to vote MadTV. There's just something about it that makes me keep watching.

It's a wash for me. It really depends on your taste in humor I think though. Mad tends to go more with dark satire while SNL relies more on over the top character comedy. Both have their moments, both have their failures.
As far as my pick for best sketch comedy, I'd go with either Chappelle's Show, or Mr. Show (HBO). Both are better than SNL or Mad TV.

yeah, i think both David Cross & Bob Odenkirk are comic geniuses. Anybody ever watch any of Cross's standup specials? They're some of the best you'll see.

I liked Mad TV at first, but over the years it's gotten old. Anytime you start losing cast members, or adding new ones, the show starts going down hill. They reuse the same characters way too much, to often too. How many times can "He looka like a man" be funny?
That's really what happened to Monty Python. John Cleese left, and the others just lost focus. Python really should have called it quits on the Flying Circus sooner than they did. I don't think he carried the show exactly, but he did help make it what it was. Without him, there was just a huge void. Had anyone else left instead it would probably have been the same result.
I'd compare Mr. Show and Mad TV both to SCTV, more than SNL. All three are more about the characters, whereas SNL is more about the costumes, celebrity guests, and fancy sets. They are alot more surreal than SNL too.

You said it perfectly, lowkey. I think sketch comedy shows are a lot better in their first few seasons, especially MadTV and Monty Python, as you said.

As far as my pick for best sketch comedy, I'd go with either Chappelle's Show Right about now, I'm thinking the funniest thing I've ever seen on a televised program in my entire life is the riding in the car with Wayne Brady segment of Chappelle's Show.

Oh man, I LOVED that sketch! -"Is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a b&tch?"- One of my fav lines ever.

It was the perfect set-up... Dave is already a little worried when we see them in the car because of his infamous (at that time as well) jokes about Wayne Brady, then right away Dave gets worried when he's not driving them through the 'upper' part of town... Then, the crime and murder spree... And of course it's working on at least 2 different levels - seeing Wayne Brady do all the things we see him doing, and watching Dave Chappelle basically look more and more like a paranoid white person in 'the ghetto'... Basically, Wayne Brady 'made' Dave Chappelle look like what he assumed Wayne Brady was.

Kids in the Hall was okay. Not the best, not the worst. I really liked Hollow Men, though.

Was the Hollow Men that thing that was on Comedy Central about 2 years ago?
