Has anyone seen them both?
I saw the first one, was pleasently surprised that it was as decent a movie as it was. And I have no hopes whatsoever about the sequel. Why a sequel? Makes no sense (other than money).
Does anyone prefer one over the other? Which one?

I saw the first one on the day it was released, and was left underwhelmed. From what I've heard of the sequel, it's nothing but a bloodier rehash of the original. I may check it out one day, with really low expectations.

Why did it underwhelm you?

Why did it underwhelm you? For one thing, it was advertised on some websites and magazines as "the goriest American movie ever", but many of the torture scenes cut away before anything cringe-worthy happens! Also, there way, way too many scenes of the three main (unlikable) characters partying. We get it! Move on, already! Plus, any sense of believability was ruined by the overwhelming coincidences leading to the finale. I know what Eli Roth was trying to accomplish with this movie, and while it is a big step in the right direction for him, it left a bad taste in my mouth. Sickest movie ever made? This was more like the common cold!

I thought the original was pretty good. But not as great as the hype tries to make you believe. I went into the first viewing expecting too much, but the second time around I liked it better. I haven't seen the sequel, but I'm sure I'll get around to it someday.

I thought the film was certainly predictable. There were no surprises at all. But, for having that quality, which would normally be a great detriment to the movie... it was still a powerful film, I thought. It had some very interesting qualities.
I agree it wasn't very gory. But I'd say Roth used just the right amount because there were definitely moments where you didn't want to look at the screen, but I also distinctly remember flinching during at least one moment. That has literally happened to me maybe twice before in over 14 years of watching horror movies. I'm not an easy guy to make recoil from something onscreen. So, perhaps psychologically, the violence worked perfectly.
But I think the film also makes a very important statement about torture and the ways in which people justify using it, not to mention prostitution.
And so, I'm really not happy that they decided to make a sequel. Especially since after seeing the first movie, I heard that Eli Roth didn't care about trying to make the film any kind of message. Because then, what the hell is the point of watching a movie like that? Or making a sequel? It seems to me, simply based on principle, a sequel should not and will not work on any level. But I'll try to think about whatever you guys have to say about it.

Speaking of Eli Roth, what did you think of Cabin Fever?

Haven't seen it. I'm afraid to. I don't want to hate it. At least, not after liking Hostel. I should probably get it - it's only $5.50 at Wal-Mart. But that goddamn DVD doesn't say whether or not it's Widescreen.

I actually liked it quite a bit. The worst thing about it was Eli Roth's cameo appearance. He's really annoying as an actor. But other than that I thought it was pretty good.

I actually really liked his Audio Commentary on the Hostel disc, the solo one. He had a lot of interesting things to say about making the movie. Not much about his influences, but a lot of big time directors take him seriously. Although, if I had never seen Hostel and hated Cabin Fever, the nail in his Coffin of Hate I would have for him would be... he's something of a protege for David Lynch.
I hate David Lynch.

Everyone always says David Lynch's greatest cinematic story-telling quality / message is that small towns (not that He would know, most of the characters in his movies were played by really sophisticated, city-wise actors) that look perfect or ideally serene are always really screwed up underneath the surface. But even if that were true, wasn't something like the Ear on the front lawn in Blue Velvet just a rip-off of the Tooth in the wall from The Tenant? I didn't like The Tenant either, but David Lynch doesn't know the meaning of subtlety. In fact, Edward Scissorhands kicked Blue Velvet's ass, because when something strange happens in a Tim Burton town, at least it's entertaining.

i just watched hostel 2 i actually liked it alot..its nothing new or original..kinda just like a continuation of the first overall tho it kept me entertained...i dont think it was as brutal as the first although it did have 1 nasty scene that made even me feel for the character...and that doesnt happen often and one other scene which i am about to spoil for you..i had already known about it from seeing a post on IMDB....its just 1 scene so its not a big deal..but if you dont wanna know then stop reading now at the end a guy gets his dick and balls cut off..you can almost feel the pain as she snips it off with some wire or bolts cutters
