I dig Savini's SE work but I'd probably put Rob Bottin and Rick Baker above him.
Savini does great gore but Bottin and Baker are geniuses...Bottin worked on Carpenter's The Thing and both him and Baker were responsible for the transformation scene in An American Werewolf In London which is above anything Savini has done.
It sounds like I'm bashing Savini but I'm not at all.

Savini is more gore/splatter though.I would never mention him as far as transformation/mutation type effects go. Death to CGI!

It sounds like I'm bashing Savini but I'm not at all. I agree, I love Savini's work as well, but being the Were-nut that I am (not to mention The Thing), I gotta give the edge to Bottin and Baker. Not just for their Were-work either. Just look at some of the movies on their resumes: Rob Bottin-King Kong ('76) -Piranha -The Fog -Maniac -The Howling (my FAV transformation scene) -The Thing -Legend -Innerspace -Robocop -Total Recall -Se7en -Fight Club -Twilight Zone The Movie -Mimic Rick Baker-It's Alive -King Kong ('76) -Star Wars (2nd unit makeup) -The Howling -The Funhouse -An American Werewolf in London -Videodrome -Thriller (music video) -Harry and the Hendersons -Werewolf (TV series--see addendum below) -Wolf -Ed Wood -Batman Forever -The Nutty Professor -The Frighteners -Men in Black -Planet of the Apes (remake) -The Ring -Hellboy -Cursed (not the awful CGI) ***One note about Baker's work on the Werewolf TV series..................The were-baddies seen on that series were the wolves Baker wanted to make in AWiL............he wasn't allowed to do so though as Landis insisted on a quadripedal "animal-like" version, rather than a bipedal "monster-like" version. It's also why the wolves in the television series are eerily similar to the ones found in The Howling........Baker wasn't able to completely finish up his work in The Howling since he was being paid more to move over to work for Landis on AWil, but luckily a young Rob Bottin was able to pick up and carry on Baker's vision without missing a beat. Anyways, since most people aren't familiar with the Werewolf TV series, here's a pic montage of Baker's Baddies that he created for it: Like I said, this is Baker's original vision for AWiL. He took the job for this show not for pay (the budget was very small), but rather because he was always really pissed that he didn't get to bring them to the big screen because of the disagreement with Landis. He's also said that he wishes he would've stayed on for Dante's The Howling for the very same reason, although he really liked what Bottin did with his ideas and considers Bottin's creations to be superior to his in AWiL. This surprises most people because the AWiL wolf is widely considered the grandaddy of werewolves. But I gotta say that I agree with Baker. While I love the wolfie in AWiL, it's not even my SECOND favorite movie werewolf. That place would go to Bottin's baddies in The Howling. My all-time fav is Baker's wolfies in the Werewolf TV series. His true vision finally realized is THE perfect werewolf i.m.o. It's truly flawless and I wouldn't change a thing. If it makes it to the final 3 in my Werewolf Battle (if and when I ever finish it ), it's definitely getting my vote. 2nd place -- The Howling (sorry for the nudie Marsha Quist, I didn't feel like taking the time to edit it out. Btw, she's dead now. Died of brain cancer ) 3rd Place -- AWiL (not sure who looks more wolfish here, the Beast or Baker, lol!) *** Oh, and I also saw recently that Baker is doing the effects for the upcoming '09 reworking of the classic The Wolfman. Let's just hope his latex work does all the talking and not the crappy CGI we saw in Wes Craven's Cursed.

I found a torrent for it and I'm downloading right now as we speak! The only thing I hate about watching "so bad it's funny" movies like this is that I get all pissed that there's no MST3K to rip it to shreds for me! ;D

Well, just got done watching it..........................I never thought I'd actually see a werewolf movie that would make The Howling II look good................until now! Wow what a piece of garbage. The worst was the cinematography. It was like a toddler with A.D.D. on Crank was holding the camera..................Awful, awful movie.

I give Rick Baker the #1 award in my book for best effects. Savini would most likely be #2.
Then, of course, there are people like Dick Smith (Exorcist, Scanners) and Stan Winston (Pumpkinhead, Predator, Aliens) and John Carl Buechler (Re-Animator, Demonic Toys, Troll, Ghost Town) and Kevin Yagher (Child's Play, A Nightmare on Elm Street sequels) and Chris Walas (Gremlins, The Fly)

For all-around effects, I go with KNB.They do everything from slasher-gore to morph-type effects. I read that Benicio Del Toro is doing the Wolfman remake. Great pick in my opinion. He's totally creepy and to me looks like a descendant of Lon Chaney himself! (at least when Lon Chaney played Quasimodo in the Hunchback of Notre Dame" back in the day.)

Some parts make you think they were actually trying to be serious.............other parts make you think they were just going for some bloody gore............and yet other parts lead you to believe they were trying to make a horror comedy. The really sad thing is that whatever they were going for with this turd, they failed miserably at every angle. Biggest stinker I've seen in quite some time! I wonder if it is true about Benicio and Scarlett Johannson getting down in an elevator. I have heard many women say he is hot but to me he looks like a glue-sniffer/crackhead.Great actor, don't get me wrong!

Tom Savini is totally numero uno, but there are also others not mentioned here (I think) who are close to his quality like Screaming Mad George (Society and the cockroach death in Nightmare on elm street 4) as well as Bob Keen (Hellraiser, Fallen Angels).

I don't think the effects for Hellraiser were that great. But then, the MPAA kind of censored them all out.
I think Ed French deserves mention. He didn't do much, but I have been more impressed by his work than anyone else. He made the famous arrow in the throat for Sleepaway Camp, and did the plentiful gore from my favorite splatter movie- Dead Dudes in the House. Watch that movie and you'll never forget "the window scene."

Oh yeah, Ed French. I forgot about him. They only thing I know him from is the make-up effects from several Tales from the Darkside episodes. There was one episode with a really scary vampire and it was him under all the make-up!
