This is a tough one. A close call between Texas Chain Saw, Halloween, and Dawn... I'm going to have to go with Dawn of the Dead.

Day of the Dead is good, biscuit? I've never watched it, as I heard it wasn't as good as Romero's other entries in the "Dead" series.

Toss up between TCM and Black Xmas for me..............I'll go with TCM.
Dawn of the Dead is an awesome movie, but i'm just not the zombie nut that most people are.
I'll give Halloween credit for being the benchmark that it is, but to me it's one of the most overrated movies of all time.
Phantasm is a fun movie, but it doesn't belong in the same conversation as these others. Besides, Phantasm II was better than the original anyways imo.
Finally, The Hills Have Eyes is good, but not great. I actually liked the remake a lot better. (i know, i know. flame away, i don't care)
Besides, I'd take Suspiria, The Exorcist, and/or The Last House on the Left over half the pack here anyways.

It's not as good as Night or Dawn plot wise. The gore is better, and doesn't look as fake. It's worth checking out at least once, or even twice. It's one of those that grows on me more everytime I see it.

ok never mind my last statement...for some reason i had day of the dead in my head thinking it was dawn of the dead..im a huge zombie fan but day of the dead was a big dissapointment.. I'm not a huge zombie fan but Day of the Dead was just stupid. It had some good gore but that's it. It's mostly just a bunch of idiot military people yelling in an underground bunker. That's it. And Dawn of the Dead is not a perfect movie. It's too melodramatic. Which sort of works for it, in its' favor. But if you like that, it's personal preference and nothing more, because it's also a risky way to tell a story. Usually, that element is too mopey and belligerent. The only thing that makes it work for Dawn of the Dead is the film's end-of-the-world scenario. If it weren't for that, the movie itself would be a drag. A few points for Dawn being fun, because it was. But maybe the "Best Horror Film of the 1970's" shouldn't be that much fun... I'm going with Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Because it's flaws are crucial to the movie. It's supposed to look gritty, which it does. The acting is supposed to be generally non-feeling and naturalistically blah-zay. The people are supposed to be freaky. The events are supposed to be raw. Everything in that movie went the way it should have gone, everything was perfect. But I do want to take this opportunity to say that I think Carrie, Suspiria, and The Exorcist (neither of which were on the list but should have been) all came closer to being #1 than Dawn of the Dead. It's just that military thing... Well that, and the look of the zombies. Everybody knows those zombies aren't that great-looking. So... "perfect movie" my foot. But it's still very good, though - I admit.

Although... I accidentally voted for Halloween.
My general ranking for best 15 horror movies of the '70s (meaning, I may have forgotten a few):
1. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) 2. Halloween (1978) 3. Suspiria (1977) 4. Carrie (1976) 5. The Exorcist (1973) 6. Dawn of the Dead (1978) 7. Deep Red (1975) 8. The Last House on the Left (1972) 9. Rabid (1977) 10. Deranged (1972) 11. Alien (1979) 12. Black Christmas (1974) 13. The Hills Have Eyes (1977) 14. Phantasm (1979) 15. It's Alive (1973)

This was hard as Hell.
Love all of these, but had to go with Black Christmas which basically kick-started my favorite sub-genre of Horor, the Slasher flick.

^^^^ Finally someone else besides me is willing to admit that Black Xmas started the slasher genre, and not Halloween! Thank you Mr. Price!

^^^^ Finally someone else besides me is willing to admit that Black Xmas started the slasher genre, and not Halloween! Thank you Mr. Price! Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about. It's pretty well-known that Black Christmas and Bava's Bay Of Blood were the two main movies that started the Slasher flick.
