Anyone hear about this? It seems to be the next really big thing in horror. All the major players in the horror review field seem to be really blown away by it. Even Slant Magazine are impressed, and they knew Saw and Haute Tension were shit and that The Descent wasn't the be-all-end-all nor savior of the horror genre.
And since I know nothing about what's being released widespread, nation-wide theatrically - is it in actual theaters? Haven't seen any ads on TV (that's being dominated strangely enough by Quarantine).

Actually, I believe I said almost all. Mal was the one who said I was all horror from this decade sucked. Go back to the Hostel discussion posts - I believe you were here when we had those. Plus, remember the Masters of Horror discussions? At all... You experiencing a bit of MEMORY LOSS in your young-age, Shunty?
Besides, all I'm saying here is - has anyone here heard of it?

It's pretty much the only horror project that dared to have a different style than all the other horror films to come out post-2000 so far. And the first season actually made convincing use of CGI. As for the second season, almost all downhill. Only Washingtonians saved it and Right to Die would be the best if not for the CGI.
About the rest of horror this decade, there's room for movies like Splinter to be good. If they stop using CGI and learn from Slither's mistakes. Of course it probably won't be great because all movies are still feeling the pressure to conform in terms of visual style. I have no doubt that the camerawork and production design / art direction will be crap or just copy the other movies. But in terms of writing and pacing, there's always room for a good horror movie to come out, even in this sad, sad decade.

I think this year has made history in America as some movies are on DVD and in theaters at the same time. laz said something made good use of cgi! mark this down in history! i'm not gonna let you live this down. You were here, Shunty, I said that a lot actually. And I already made examples - Argento's Jenifer (I couldn't tell her eyes were computer generated, as was the little girl's face when she was eating her insides). That's almost all I remember mentioning, but also- Coscarelli's Incident On and Off a Mountain Road, Hooper's Dance of the Dead, and Medak's Washingtonians all had scenes using CGI that took my breath away. They used it for BACKGROUNDS, to invent a place and it looked amazing! Especially Washingtonians, I couldn't even tell it was a fake building front. It looked so cool and hypnotic. As did those amazing shots in Incident of the rocky mountainous river bottom and the moon. And that great shot in Dance of the Dead of the wasteland cityscape background as they buried the girl's sister.

i watched it, it was good but nothing groundbreaking, pretty much ur standard people are trapped in a building and somethin is after them, it did have some pretty cool and good special fx tho. like isaid its a good movie worth a watch but i think alot of the reviews over hyped it

Did you read the reviews? I do but it usually goes in one ear and out the other.
I'm not trying to say anything about the movie, but you have an alarming tendency to write off a lot of really good stuff with your whole "nothing special" routine. Especially the first season of Masters of Horror. I'll see Splinter when it comes to DVD but yeah, you have a funny idea of what is and isn't special - if I were just to judge what you accidentally say and not what you take the time to tell me.

yea i read alot of reviews, and they made it sound like it was the best movie of the year
like i said its a good movie, it does just about everything good and right, it just doesnt feel like anything we havent seen before, although the monster is pretty cool and like i said the special fx were good, but it was all wrapped up with a cliche been there, done that, seen it ending
i would deff say to check it out as its a good movie, but like i said dont expect the best movie of the year or something you havent seen before

like i said its a good movie, it does just about everything good and right, it just doesnt feel like anything we havent seen before Excellent point. Of course, you probably know even if you don't always admit it - it's not just what we see or what they show us, it's also about the way they show it as well. But yeah again, I'll wait until I see it to judge the movie. I'm just talking principles here. To keep things clear. it was all wrapped up with a cliche been there, done that, seen it ending Cliches are something we as horror fans just have to live with. They're not going anywhere. In fact, they usually make the horror film. Like it's nothing without a certain amount of them. For instance- can you think of any horror movies where nobody dies? But I know exactly what you mean. I think it's all about plotline. If some filmmaker would just do something different, we'd all be better for it. I think with the reviewers of Splinter, they're judging it well through the bullshit trends and everything (trying to find something of value in all this crap we have now), and that if this had been one of the first in this line, maybe horror could have gone further and done more over these last 6 or so years. And I never expect to see something I haven't seen before. I'm just happy when it's made well. That's all. Nothing more important to me than a movie made well. Nothing at all. Whether it's extreme or restrained, artful or cheap, ambitious or run-of-the-mill. I like it all if it's done well.

well i agree with you some cliches will never go anywhere, but as i was watching this movie in a way it felt like it was something we have all seen before but in a way it did feel like something fresh and new, i think because it was well made and because the "monster" was pretty cool and different, never once while sitting through it did i think it was bad or boring like i said, i just wish there would have thrown us some kind of curve ball at the end to make it stand out a little more, but hey if this had gone nationwide to theaters i would have to say it would have been the best horror movie in theaters this year, at least that i had seen, so u shouldnt be dissapointed, also if u get HD channels i would check them out, never know if it might pop up
