SO, it looks like we are having a federal election next month. Since you are all "yanks", I was wondering if they show any of our politics on American tv or teach any in school?

Careful there. Those are fightin' words where I come from. :0P
And no I've never heard much about Canadian politics here. The NRA used to put out infomercials about Canada's gun control policies, but that's about it. Basically they were trying to equate Canada with the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany (contrary to popular belief, they didn't outlaw private gun ownership, and actually encouraged it, in defiance to international law).
People in favor of socialized medicine usually cite Canada as a success story there. Basically people in the US will use Canada for propaganda, but outside of colleges and universities there isn't much serious study of Canadian politics.

Be sure to vote to express your opinions or do the republicans have that fixed too?

They fixed the 2000 and 2004 elections, so I won't be surprised if McCain wins this one - with SUSPICIOUS results and people at least finding exactly where the Republicans fixed the election (2000: Florida, 2004: Ohio) but not being able to stop them because Americans are too afraid to Impeach.

americans think mccain and sara palin are great people because that is what the mass media is feeding to them. people will believe pretty much anything they are told in this country.

If their politics swing to the right - or they believe in the seriousness made out of terrorism by the right wing media even though 9/11 has been the only legitimate American attack this decade, and they have racists in their family they won't even think of voting for Obama.

Most of my family is from Alabama, and unfortunately there are a lot a racists there. Still that doesn't mean I have to be one of them. My parents raised me better than that.
My first election, was back in 96 and I was happy to vote for Clinton. Obama is the first candidate since then that I'm proud to give my vote to.

the truth is that he (obama) will probably fail us in the end too, but we won't make it much much worse like mccain.

Just like a fair trial, I believe everyone deserves a fair campaign. I find the media coverage in this to be very left-orientated(other than Fox News). Dig up dirt on Obama, you're a racist or afraid of change. Dig up dirt on McCain or Palin and you are all of a sudden clever or a hero. Let's be serious, every politician has made questionable decisions.

Just like a fair trial, I believe everyone deserves a fair campaign. I find the media coverage in this to be very left-oriented (other than Fox News). Nobody is saying he's a great guy other than celebrities. They're just covering every moment that's happening. You people don't know anything about the media, do you? Before Fox News claimed there was a great liberal bias in the media - there was no bias. There were no commentators saying anything positive. Just reporting news articles. That's it. They couldn't point to a liberal bias then OR now (other than perhaps The Daily Show and Keith Olbermann) to save their lives, with both hands tied behind their backs, blind-folded![/quote] Dig up dirt on Obama, you're a racist or afraid of change. Who said anyone dug up anything on Obama?? The angry Pastor was just that - an angry Pastor. Do you know anything about the majority of Christians? Just because some Christian preachers say God is an angry man who will punish you severely for so much as lying or imbibing hard liquor - do you think that scares anyone? Do they believe in everything their preachers are saying? Does anyone? No - most people pick and choose what they believe. So, if you're a nutcase, a paranoid Rightie, OR a racist - you'll believe Obama agrees with everything his Pastor says. But in reality, Obama wouldn't be where he is now if it weren't for those things his Pastor is against. So he is clearly not as bitter as the angry guy. Dig up dirt on McCain or Palin and you are all of a sudden clever or a hero. Nobody has that attitude. You're making this up to suit your argument. Let's be serious, every politician has made questionable decisions. Who the hell would disagree with you there? That's common knowledge.

On hindsight, I will do more research to support my opinions. But even that is tricky, numbers and statistics can be spun, flipped, etc. Actual doings can be misinterpreted.
Laz, I loved your reference to the Daily Show and Olberman.
Whoever does win, let's hope they bring about good change and not just change.

I was going to leave it at that but how about one more...
A few months ago, while campaigning, Obama made a lovely comment about workers being "bitter" and "cling to their religion/guns", something along those lines. I am a production welder and make products for sale worldwide. I am scared for my job and the jobs of production workers everywhere. With so much being farmed out either to Mexico or China, who wouldn't be pissed off/scared?

So what?! It's better than just bending over. I'm no bible-thumper but I'm positive that living by a few guidelines is better than just being some pig doing whatever you feel like doing.
