laz it doesnt matter what i was told abut tcm, it bored the fuck out of me and its that simple, i could watch it 100 times and it would bore the fuck out of me, but i wouldnt subject myself to that torture, it may be a masterpiece to you but to me its crap, except that and move on, i understand it i just didnt like it, have you not realized i like diff horror then you, i dont care for friday the 13th or halloween or tcm or hellraiser, i like 80's horror and the shoestring budget type of horror, its just my preference, most low budget movies i think are great you would prob hate and i can respect that and not call you out on it, so learn to respect that i dont like tcm, its a masterpiece to you but thats it

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) is a masterpiece to the horror genre. Fact. End of discussion. Neither of us have any say in the matter. It's over. Do you feel better now? Well the Exorcist didn't live up to my expectations either. I watched TCM before I knew much about it. I put off seeing the Exorcist until a girl-friend made me watch it with her, and by that time it had been so overhyped to me, I found it boring. I'm sure if I had of watched it when I was 8 years old too, I might feel differently about it today. Rosemary's Baby is another one. Unlike the Exorcist though, I truly can't see why people ever found it good, scary, or shocking. It's simply 2+ hours, of an extremely annoying Mia Farrow, trying to avoid elderly people. That's the daily routine of every douche bag, that dumps elderly parents off at nursing homes, and forget about them until it's time for the will reading. Nothing shocking, or scary about that at all, even when you factor in the devil-baby at the end. The Omen on the other hand, was an enjoyable movie, even if it is campy. Rosemary's Baby is the greatest horror film ever made in my opinion. Because it is unbelievably fascinating. Every time I watch that movie, I'm always blown away by how smart it is, how detailed it is. How... horrifying an idea it is. It's basically the horror of a woman's right to choose being taken away from her. And the people she trusted most betraying her, killing her baby, impregnating her with the most evil thing she can imagine. And she doesn't even know it! And we don't even know it! And she can't trust anyone, even people who aren't in the cult betray her. She is looked at as insane when she knows something is wrong. Dr. Hill calls a man she told him wanted to kill her baby, Dr. Hill turned her over to him. She tried everything to save her baby, her soul. And she screams to God for help and she doesn't get any help. She's drugged. She's raped. She's driven almost completely insane. And she's reduced to living a life for one thing. And that thing is taken away from her - ripped away from her. And every element of the film from an artistic and technical aspect is executed brilliantly. It's such a perfect film, it's just blinding. Yeah it's 2 hours and 14 minutes long. But it takes that much time to tell her story right. And they do. As for The Omen... well, I just don't like that movie. It's hard to watch.

I must say,T, I am a little surprised to hear you talk about a genre classic in such a way. It was visceral, disturbing and grotesque, all without being over the top. The first time I watched it, I felt like I was literally watching a snuff film. The remake contained none of this atmosphere. I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you on this one. It is genius! Love and props! (I am Canadian...)

SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE- As it is not really a "slasher", I'd say this is my favorite "Damsels-In- Distress" movie. A creepy killer,a phallic murder weapon,a killer synth-score, and some good acting by the pretty much unknown cast.Bravo!
Looking back over my list,it's pretty easy to see that music is the #1 aspect to any of my viewing experiences.(sounds funny) Using sounds to punctuate scares or other emotions is the cornerstone of any horror film and can make or break it. I can only name the original TCM as a cult film without any major musical influences. (other than Franklin whining or the cool sound made as a female protagonist bursts out of a box/freezer)

Canada rocks. They kill less of their own than we do, they have more advanced social values, and the citizens have more freedoms than Americans do. Fuck sports. Hey laz, it's not my favorite horror movie ever but Rosemary's Baby is totally up there. I'm glad to see you defending a movie I love and respect so much! Thanks. ^^ and i can respect that, because you arent trying to force it on me T, that's your answer for everything. I just tell you the truth. You're the one who makes a big deal out of everything. It's not like I'm right there with you, shoving a spoon of something down your throat. These are just words, they can't hurt. Get over it. or tell me i dont know horror I'm not saying you have to like it. Just respect the movie, because it has done a lot for the genre and is a masterpiece, and don't talk shit about it unless you're going to explain yourself in detail - which you should and which you never, ever do. You're the one who always has to turn this into "it sucks." "I didn't like it" is never good enough for you. Calling it boring and saying the remake is better is not substantial reasoning to shit all over a classic. You're attacking the genre I love and care about.

I wasn't really talking to anybody. I saw the discussion about Canada and had to chime in with a South Park quote. It's permanently seared into my brain, as after that episode aired, every idiot on youtube said it while thinking they were original.

Canada has good whisky. Being from Tennessee it pains me to admit this, but Crown Royal is much better than Jack Daniels.
Scotland of course beats the US and Canada combined at distilling. Europe in general just treats booze as an art form, instead of just another commercial enterprise, and/or way to forget about how shitty your life is for a while. You wanna call something scotch in Scotland, then by law you better goddamn well make sure it's proper scotch, and not just a cheap bottle of hobo swill you ran though your car radiator.

Well said. Except - I still don't understand how you can call The Texas Chainsaw Massacre "boring." I don't see what about it bored you. I agree it's not the fastest paced movie in the world. And you have to wait quite a while to get to the point of the movie (the cannibal redneck family has all the story and plot points waiting at the other end). But - that's what 1970's horror was like. I don't understand at all how you hate this movie so much more than most '70s horror movies. They're very much alike in this regard. They're sparingly paced, the feel is more important than the plot, and you learn more at the end than you do in the beginning. Actually, I guess I don't completely mean what I said about '70s horror. Most of it is plot-driven. Now that I take a good look at it - I was going over my DVD collection last night thinking about the movies again. I mean what I said about the slow pace. But, the best '70s horror films like Suspiria, Halloween, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre aren't really about dialogue and they play the characters for normal people just being themselves in a terrifying situation. The point of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has to do with the Vietnam War. And I don't get it either. Like I've said a zillion times, I don't know everything. But, in the meantime, the movie is about being uncomfortable. These people are hot, sweaty, humid, and they're trying to do something fun with their free time. I guess they didn't plan on the weather being so bad and the neighbors to their old house to be so crazy. Anyway, the film is still incredibly unique. Nobody edited horror movies (to my knowledge) like this. And every shot of the scenes of Leatherface killing or chasing the teens/20-somethings is legendary. Especially when he's chasing Sally. That scene where she's running upstairs and he's chainsawing through the door is so suspenseful and horrific, I can't believe it. I still can't believe that I saw it. And that scene at the dinner table with her eyes. This movie created so much horror with just a girl being tortured by the fear of what she's seen these people do to her friends and the various corpses in the house. How the hell could you be bored by that? I swear this movie transcends the 1970's styles and still works. And like I said, I rewatched it and understood it better. I didn't let anyone else tell me it was a great movie. I just trusted all the people saying it was a masterpiece enough to give it the benefit of the doubt. I watched the movie again, watched a lot of other horror movies, and so not only can I place it in historical context, but I know what sets it apart from all the others. I know what it has that no other horror movie has.

I watched it again, and I noticed something. Was Leatherface wearing Franklin's face at the dinner table scene? It certainly looks like it, without the make up of course.
Plus, why else would the Hitchhiker say "Do you like his face?". Man, that would just be terrible seeing someone wearing your brother's mutilated skin. Even thinking about it gives me a queasy feeling.

Lowkey, I'm gonna agree with you on both fronts. Crown Royal is better that Jack. Jack gives me wicked heartburn. But, yes European distilling even kicks our ass. Although, that being said, our beer really is a hundred times better than yours. The higher alcohol content alone wins that race.
Laz, that argument for the TCM was eloquent and well thought out. Full marks for that one, man. You got me in your corner on this one.
And Piggsy, I haven't watched it in while, but I'm pretty sure you're right about that one.
T, you chose to stretch out the "k" in weak? Try saying that out loud. I think you'll feel silly. And that's right, I forgot about the Craptors. Shame how all that stuff has to come out of the east. We here in the west, don't really care for the east as such. Although the Jays have won your vaunted world series a couple of times...
