It's fake. Leprosy doesn't actually cause limbs to rot off, or anything like that. It's a neurological disease thought to be closely related to Parkinson's disease, and often misdiagnosed as syphilis in the past. The damage to the nervous system causes victims to not notice pain. Minor cuts and scrapes end up getting infected, because of it, which is what leads the misconception that the disease deforms the body.
In the earlier stages it does cause discolored patches on the skin, but at that point it's easily curable.
The good news about it is that around 90-95% of all people have a natural immunity to it. Those that don't only have around a 1% chance of getting it, if that. Poor sanitation and diet is what causes it to be so widespread in developing nations. In developed nations, it's extremely rare for people to get it.

I checked my Discovery channel On Demand service, and the show about this poor fella is showing for the next couple weeks or so. I'm definitely going to check it out when I have the time.
