Sure did - I was actually almost amazed at how good it was. Really old-fashioned-ly made for 1981, but maybe that's why it was really good. Like the director had never seen any newer, gore-centered horror movies.

^^^^^I totally agree. Unfortunately, most people ignored it back in '81 because 'AWil' and 'The Howling' hit theaters that same year. Everyone was on a "hollywood" werewolf high after those movies and I think they were expecting 'Wolfen' to be a similar type of movie. Oh well, screw people who don't have any taste!

Omg, Arachniphobia That movie scared the everloving crap out of me when I was a kid. Still does, actually. I hated spiders then, and I hate them now.

^^^ Yeah I was never big on spiders as a kid, and after seeing that movie, I wanted absolutely nothing to do with 'em. But a couple years back I dated this girl who actually had a tarantula for a pet. After a month of trying to convince me to hold it I finally broke down and did. I'll admit that at first I was absolutely terrified. But after letting her crawl around on my hand and arm for awhile I realized there was really no reason to be as frightened by them as I was. That being said, I don't plan on getting one as a pet anytime soon!

I never cared for Arachnophobia. It just never did anything for me.

It freaked the living fuck out of me! If it didn't do anything 'to' you, you know- didn't make you feel something on you which is a completely common reaction... you're not human. No offense. But it's true.

No, it's actually one of the creepiest movies ever made. The people who say it didn't creep them out were either playing macho or they have minor brain functioning problems. Because I am not the most sensitive viewer either. It's not about being creeped out by spiders. You don't have to have a fear of spiders - you just have to have a fear of being invaded, raped, or probed by something you don't give permission. I mean- you were watching the movie, weren't you? You got the point, right? Jeff Daniels set a great portion of the psychology of why this movie is so freaking terrifying up when he gives his little speech on his way to the barn about his experience with a spider as a baby.
Arachnophobia is one of the most effective horror films I've ever seen. The more you watch it or the more mature you pretend to be, it's true it works a little less. But it still gets you at least once. At least one really good freak out. If it didn't... you were purposefully trying to avoid it. Because this movie actually has that incredible reputation of freaking so many people out. It sure as hell earned that too. If you try hard enough to feel or not feel anything, you can make it happen. But if you actually act naturally and take this movie naturally- it will freak the living hell out of you.
It psychologically and viscerally sets up these spiders to be unbelievably frightening. It's also one of the greatest jump/boo/scare-machines in cinema history. I have the testimonies of literally dozens of people to prove it.

What I said is the way it is. That's... kind of why I said it.

It freaked me out when I saw it as a small child. But having watched it as an adult it doesn't have the same effect on me. That being said, I do think it does an excellent job of setting up and delivering the scares.

Exactly. And it still works at least once. I'm telling you, it's all about the mind. If you turn it off and try to find only humor, you can do that. But if you're willing to just let it come over you, you will feel that damn thing like the powerhouse of fright that it is.
