Why does anyone get so over-worked about seeing animals die in movies where people are tortured, murdered and/or raped? I don't understand... Of course causing pain to a living creature for no reason is wrong, but as long as it's a quick death or a special effect who really cares? I'm far more upset when I see women being abused than animals..

People are desensitized when it comes to the killing of people in movies, as it's been done so much. If nearly every movie started killing animals, then people would get used to it and not complain.

Desensitized or not, it should be pretty obvious that if you find animal deaths more disturbing than rape scenes there's something wrong with your way of thinking.
No matter how many times I see rape in a movie it doesn't get any better.
But animals are here for us to eat.

How do you know people weren't here for us to eat?

I don't like rape scenes either, Biscuit.
And the reason why we have a problem watching animals get killed is the same reason why we love them - we give them very little and they give us much more. They're not as needy as children or people.

How do you know people weren't here for us to eat? Do I really have to answer that?

I'm like tsmooth on this topic. Nothing really upsets or bothers me in a horror movie for the most part. People, animals, rape, etc. I don't really care. Only scene that ever pissed me off much was the one i spoke of in another post from one of The Toxic Avenger movies. It didn't bother me so much that a child was killed. It was the way they portrayed it as entertainment instead of an accident. And the whole backing over him several more times while cheering and then the abhorrently long closeup of the aftermath was just completely tasteless. It was obvious that it was just added to go above and beyond any respectful limit and had no bearing at all on the rest of the movie. In other words, it had no point. That's what made it distasteful IMO.
Other than that, I guess when I found out that the dog used in the original 'Hills Have Eyes' was an actual dead German Shepard brought in from a local pound I was less than thrilled. Still not sure why Wes Craven ever deamed it necessary to go on record and admit that fact...............................

Well, I think there are many tasteless incidents of rape and animal violence in movies too. And I really mean tasteless beyond enhancing story, to the point where it just takes story offtrack and is just there for exploitation and sick-amusement purposes.

any examples Laz? i'm not trying to be rude, i was just wondering what movies come to mind for you when you think of some of these incidents. more or less wondering if you've seen some of these in scenes from movies i haven't yet seen. Oh, and let's not get into The Thing. I think we'd both agree that you and I have beat that topic to death.

You don't think those scenes were necessary in I Spit on Your Grave, Pet Sematary 2, or May? How come? Just curious.............
I'll agree with your selections of The Toxic Avenger and Friday the 13th 2. I haven't seen either It's Alive 3 or Tombs of the Blind Dead.

You don't think those scenes were necessary in I Spit on Your Grave, Pet Sematary 2, or May? How come? Just curious..... Because they weren't amusing, they didn't heighten entertainment value, and they also didn't teach or aid in showing anything that needed to be seen.

How about a movie like The Accused? That rape scene was pretty intense, but it's absolutely necessary for the plot. It's a far more tasteful movie than I Spit On Your Grave too.
ISOYG was supposedly created by a guy who had witnessed the aftermath of a rape. He found the victim in public right after, and was one of the bystanders that helped calm her down until the cops got there. He said that the incident really upset him, and the movie was his way of coping with it. In his mind he was punishing the rapist, while empowering the victim. I admit the movie is trash, but if that's true you got to respect that it wasn't meant to degrade women, but was a genuine attempt at empathy. Even if it was expressed in a very ugly way.

How about a movie like The Accused? That rape scene was pretty intense, but it's absolutely necessary for the plot. It's a far more tasteful movie than I Spit On Your Grave too. The Accused really spends a lot of time building up the victim's life and state of mind. To the point where you really need the rape to show just how she was dehumanized. To show us just how evil it was. To show us just how much she was violated, and how little she asked for it. Because she is portrayed in some people's estimation as a loose woman. So there is still some doubt in a lot of viewers' minds about how pure she is. Or whether she deserves any kind of justice or not. But I believe the film is still a statement about punishing rapists for justice toward all women, not just vengeance for one. Regardless of the intentions of Spit, it just didn't have the talent to back up it's idea. Besides, I'm surprised that movie gets any praise from horror fans at all. Because they use the rape scene to justify murder. But... have you ever seen a horror movie where you thought murder needed to be justified? Hell, we watch people get their heads and limbs torn off and tossed around like it's a game. We don't need torture scenes to justify revenge plots. And it's not "punishing" anyone as far as I'm concerned. The only way to do that is to make the rapist feel what the victim feels. Not to kill them, but to torture them. To rape them somehow. And to make them live with their horror and agony. Not die quickly. And even 2, 3 minutes was too quick for those guys. Its' not the ugliness that bothers me. It's the lack of true balls. It's obviously quite easy to just show a woman getting rapped, viciously murdered, humiliated, and brutalized. It's a common theme of exploitation films, action films, and crime-TV fare. What he failed to do was understand how to actually get the true justice he seeked.
