Many times, horror movies that go direct-to-video are horrible, but there have been some exceptions. List some that you would recommend!
Prey (2007)
Brutal (2007)
Shredder (2002)

Shredder kind of stunk. It was close to being better than average, but...
I believe the Rose McGowan movie Devil in the Flesh was a direct-to-video release. And I loved it. Jack Frost was direct to video. And I've come to like that one a little bit.

I forgot one myself... Campfire Tales (1996) - the one with Christine Taylor, James Marsden, and apparently Jacinda the Australian model from The Real World: London (1995). It was impressively stylish and fairly well-made for a direct to video horror movie.
This next one is really out of print, but if you ever find a copy, a lot of people have remarked it's worth checking out: The Clown at Midnight. It's very brutal (not really gory), but very intense and shocking.

It's weird that you mention The Clown at Midnight. I've been trying to track that one down for a while now.

Good luck. I don't even think that's been released to DVD yet. Which is actually strange, considering how many actual Stars are in it. Margot Kidder (from Superman, The Amityville Horror, Black Christmas, and Sisters), Christopher Plummer (from The Sound of Music), and Tatyanna Ali (from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air), to name the biggest.

Hey piggsy, how was Brutal? I've been meaning to check that one out ever since tsmooth brought it up a while back.......................
Anyways, I'd recommend Big Bad Wolf. Not sure if it was direct to DVD, but if it wasn't it had a really limited theater showing. Can't really think of anymore off the top of my head, but I deff could name a lot of DTV that I WOULDN'T recommend!

As would I. Pretty much anything Columbia-TriStar/Sony distributes would be a good place to start.

Actually, the movie "Brutal" was pretty good, a lot better than what I was expecting. The cover makes you think you're in for an idiotic Hostel rip-off, but it's far from it. It's a good slasher film a lot of dark humor.

Don't expect something perfect, though. Try and keep an open mind if you decide to watch it.

The Woods. It's a Lucky Mckee film that was originally slated for a theatrical release but instead was shunted straight to video. It's absolutely amazing, and was obviously heavily influenced by Suspiria. Definite recommendation there. ;D

^^^^I own The Woods and deff agree with you. After being totally blown away by how good 'May' was, I was worried Mr. McKee would hit the dreaded sophomore slump, but fortunately that was not the case. Really great flick.
I've been meaning to check out his episode of Masters of Horror called Sick Girl as I'm such a huge fan of Lucky and Angela Bettis. Laz is always going on about how good it is too. Have you seen it yet?

Yep, I own it on DVD. Pure brilliance. I'm also a huge fan of Lucky and Angela and will watch anything they're involved with. Have you seen Roman? It's sort of the male version of May, with Lucky in the starring role and Angela directing this time. I just got my copy in the mail recently and was blown away, it was so brilliant.

Nah, I haven't gotten a chance to see it yet, but it's on my list of movies I wanna see. I've also heard Kristen Bell is in it and she was on one of my favorite tv series of alltime; HBO's 'Deadwood.'
I only saw May for the first time about 6 months ago or so. But after seeing it I've been on a mission to soak up as much Lucky and Angela as I could find. I'm really looking forward to his upcoming movie 'Red.' It's supposed to have an absolutely fantastic cast.
