This is perhaps the greatest horror film opening I've ever seen! You just can't beat this fucking creepy whistling, the woeful sorrow, the sullen repression of the main character. Walking through those dark woods. The stick-like dead trees. Those hard-edged, sharp gate spikes. Cold air, her breath showing in the black night, the frozen vocals of Nanette singing "Ladybird" ...
Fright (1971): (BEEN REMOVED FROM YOUTUBE)
Any other scenes you guys think are the best openings to a horror film you've ever seen?

If I wanted to see a good movie with a special effect like that... I wouldn't expect they would serve it upfront and then, bore me the rest of the way.
I'm grateful for the work that produced the effect. But a good horror film knows how to reserve its' shock and great gore for the right moment. That makes even Nightmare on Elm Street 3 much smarter than Ghost Ship.

i wouldnt say that, i think right in the begining like that is the perfect time, i know i didnt expect it the first time i saw it and im sure not many other people did, true the rest of the movie could and should have been better, but im all for a movie to surprise me right off the bat, just give me some more of the goods throughout

Yeah but you don't get what horror is missing. It's best to start NOT with shock, but with intelligence, wit, or a good story. Why would I be impressed by a movie that starts with 1 flashy gore effect? Then they movie's spent its' entire wad and I have to sit through crud.

not if the whole movie is filled with some great gore scenes, i think every horror movie should start with a big bang like that and then keep it up throughout

Gore is not enough alone to make a good horror movie.
And there is no one rule for every horror movie. You should know better. In fact, I've said it before and I think you've agreed with me.
Horror is not a Stupid Person's Genre. It's not made to just keep people from being bored. It's still an Artform too. And Stupid Movies With Gore are not enough to keep the genre going.
Of course now, if you have other ideas - let's hear 'em.

i have nothing wrong with stupid movies filled with gore, maybe they would get boring if every single one was like that, but like i have said i watch a movie to be entertained, a movie filled with gore entertains me, therefore it does its job, i suggest you start reading books, you can actually find some smart books easier then a smart movie
i know i will never get tired of watching annoying teens get slaughtered by clans of backwoods cannibals or masked killers!! and i really dont care what you say or think
