As a little kid, this was a favorite of mine. It brought the universal monsters to a whole new audience and tossed old fans a bone. I have no hope for this remake.... anyone else a fan?

I loved this as a kid too. Remaking it is just plain wrong.

I haven't seen that movie in over a decade. Probably something like 14 years. I don't really care that they're remaking it. But it will be a bad movie and I hate (most) bad movies.

It's got all those monsters, I think Frankenstein is a good-guy but everyone else is bad, they take over the town (or try to), and a group of young kids (ages around 12-17) try to read a passage from a book to send them back.
It's just like The Goonies, only with monsters instead of an escaped gun-toating criminal family.

I always thought Frankenstein's monster was basically a supernatural version of Sloth. He served the same function really. On the other hand the monster was depicted very closely to the one in the original novel. The monster was never really supposed to be the bad guy--it was the peasant mob that was vicious, and destructive, and Dr. Frankenstein who was amoral and unethical--but for some reason the general public have always considered him a villain on the same level as Dracula.
Actually the original Dracula wasn't so much a villain either, as he was an anachronism, struggling to find a place in the modern, more advanced, and far less superstitious world. He wasn't a completely bloodthirsty, cold blooded monster, like many contemporary vampires have been portrayed. He was a really tragic figure.
The Wolf Man was basically good in the Monster Squad too. He tried to get himself locked up by the cops, so he wouldn't cause problems when he changed. He also thanked the kid that shot him with the silver bullet, for putting him out of his misery. I guess it's more appropriate to say he wasn't intentionally evil.

Okay, I've got something to say about all this "new Blu-Ray news, OMG everyone get this DVD because it's coming out on Blu-Ray!" etc, etc. I would love to see The Goonies look perfect and own the best video format possible, and watch it and enjoy it... But then, when it's over, what next? I have to hang my head, slump my shoulders, and drag my tired body over to the shelf, put the Perfect-Goonies back and say, "I guess I can't watch the Perfect-Labyrinth, Perfect-Never Ending Story, Perfect-Starman, Perfect-Ghostbusters, etc etc etc." Because what if they all haven't come out yet? And look at how much they cost and all that...
You get a buzz going from a perfect movie experience, then you have to go back to just watching the "regular" movies. Or shell out hundreds and/or thousands of dollars getting all these movies you want to see Perfect because now the Regular-DVDs just aren't good enough anymore.

In a few years there won't be any choice so you might as well get used to it.

What's next? Eventually, movie formatting will be so advanced there won't be any more options!
In fact, I'm happy with my VHS collection. They're reliable, last for decades, and you don't have to worry about scratches or smudges messing up your movie watching experience.

Oh yeah? Try getting a new VCR and tell me how much luck you do with that hunk of junk.
Every VCR I've bought in the last 5 years has been a serious tape-eater! And now the major chains don't even carry multiple brands. Almost everything is Emerson. The same VCR that eats tapes and screws with the sound quality so that, if you fast forward at all, the sound becomes muffled. You immediately have to re-wind what you just FF-ed, and then you run the risk of the image freezing - which means the machine is eating your tape.

VHS's are not cheap enough for me to keep buying into them. I'll get a few more because I guess they're never bringing them to DVD. And the out-of-print thing is bothering the hell out of me, too.
