i like when a movie is actually scary, has a strong story, is demented but not too gory, has t&a, and extends the borders of the imagination.

Very good question. Horror movies have always been special to me because they're escapist entertainment, at least most of the time. Basically, if you had a hard day at work, you can pop in a Friday the 13th DVD and have fun for a couple hours.
The horror genre has always been a prominent part of my life. Ever since I can remember, my parents have let me watch any horror movie I wished. The engrossing plotlines of Dr. Loomis chasing down Michael Myers and teens falling victim to a chainsaw-wielding psycho fascinated me. I was glued to the screen. As my classmates were frightened by the writing of R.L. Stein, I was cheering on Chucky as he slaughtered everyone in his way.
It is fun to be scared. We're all afraid of the dark, the thought of being watched, and the death of friends and loved ones. That's primordial. What horror does is it takes this fear we're all born with, and turns it into an enjoyable experience. We know it's fake, but that's part of the fun. Horror gives us the opportunity to be scared and have a good time. Of course, some of the best horror films exploit our fears without any light-hearted elements. Such films include the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Psycho, and Night of the Living Dead. Even then, you get the enjoyment of being scared.
This is the reason why I believe horror is the greatest genre of film and literature.

well i like my horror movies to either be gory and disgusting, or spooky with good atmosphere and suspense, i also love a good twist ending, when hey actually work and dont feel tacked on, but most of all i love micro budget movies, i dont care how chap the fx are or how cheap the movie feels or how badly its acted i love micro budget movies that look like they were filmed with just a cheap old camcorder..THATS WHAT I LOVE ABOUT HORROR!!!!!!!!

I think my personal taste in horror has changed since I was a kid.
When I was younger, I know I didn't really like comedy in my horror. And I didn't like depressing movies. And the gothic style really bored me. Which is one reason I never watched older horror films. And any kind of sci-fi content whatsoever put me to sleep. And films that were too slow didn't work for me.
But in years since, I've seen films of all these types that have made me start respecting them more. The Return of the Living Dead, The Howling, various Stephen King movies (The Tommyknockers, Pet Sematary, Carrie), Lucio Fulci's zombie movies, AIP / Roger Corman's 1960's movies, Frogs, Blue Sunshine, Basket Case, Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Of course, to this day, with the exception of The Fog and Carnival of Souls, I still don't care for ghost-horror films at all. I plan on re-watching the original Haunting and The Changeling soon and hoping I finally understand why people say they're so great.

I love that horror is looked down upon by so many people. I really do. That is what makes it special. It's not for everyone to understand and never was. It's a genre where word-of-mouth advertising is more effective than any huge campaign. It's a genre where anything goes...and usually does! The freedom and imagination involved in making these films is more than enough for me.(boobs help too!)
I'd say that Slashers are my favorite sub-genre. The ones where you don't know the killer and have to guess. Those are fun but enough red-herrings already!
