Been playing around with a MAME emulator:
Rastan: I always loved this one. An obvious Conan inspired platformer, it is imo one of the best from that genre ever. It's also highly underrated, and nearly forgotten.
The Simpsons: Another one I always liked. This one has held up well too. The only thing that sucks, is having to play it alone. The original machines allowed 4 players, and there cool little special team moves that could be done if two people were playing. The characters are basically the same, I'm guessing because the developers didn't want nerds killing each other, because they got stuck playing Marge or Lisa.
Dragon Breed: This is pretty damn impressive--it was released in '88 but looks like something from at least the mid-90s. It's a left-to-right scrolling shooter. I don't remember ever seeing this one at all, and I think it may have been a Japanese only machine. Basically you are a dude, flying around on a Chinese style dragon, shooting aliens(or something). The dragon is invincible and can be used as a weapon and a shield(one move has it coil around you, making you invincible for a few seconds.
Playgirls: No, it has nothing to do with naked men. Another Japanese game. Basically you are playing a pong type puzzle game. The object is to use a paddle to knock out little colored bricks with a ball. Once you clear a level, part of an image in uncovered for you. All the images are of allgedly hot women, in skimpy outfits--would have been better if they were totally nude. It's not very challenging at all. This is the kind of time waster you see on sites like Pogo, who's main target audience is ironically older women. I couldn't see actually plunking in quarter after quarter to play it, which is probably why it never was released outside of Japan.
Playgirls 2: This one is fucking weird, but a little more fun this time around. Same deal as above with the images. This time you get a little man who looks kind of like a robot ninja. He shoots a gun at other tiny men--it's sort of like Centipede, just not as challenging. The women do look better, but again I can't see paying to play this.
