the whole F13 PG-13 or R rating got me to thinking about mortal kombat
i could never understand how a game known for violence and blood got a PG-13 rating as a movie.. i meanwhen you punch or kick a guy about a gallon of blood comes out.. not to mention the finishing moves which consist of, heads, arms, torso's and legs being ripped off or having guys frozen and then cracked, knocked in a pool of acid, knocked off a platform and ipaled by spikes, hit by a train etc etc.... never could understand how a game like that could get turned into a basically bloodless PG-13 movie.. always thought it would be cool to see a mortal kombat movie that was actually like the game

Well I would love to see a violent, gory Mortal Kombat movie as well. But today... Oh fuck, they would just ruin it with CGI. Granted, the first movie had CGI in it. But that was the heyday, the Glory Days, the Super-Year of CGI: 1995. Back when nobody complained about it and it wasn't so bad. The Mask had just come to VHS, and then there was all the movies: Jumanji, Casper, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Mortal Kombat, probably some Disney movies had CGI and all that. That year was like the Hoover Dam of CGI, it filled up and got to the breaking point. And movies like Independence Day and Armageddon just burst it wide open. Which means- films should have stopped doing it. That should have been the end. But no... it wasn't. Suddenly, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, House on Haunted Hill, and The Haunting were using CGI. And it didn't even stop there... Now, we have disasters like Van Helsing and Slither and I Am Legend and Alien Vs. Predator... I think it's time we shot CGI and buried it in the ground, where it belongs.
Anyway- the 1990's was a funny time to make the movie. Because the costumes were very plastic and cheap looking and the characters were dumb and over the top and silly. And, of course there was the critical drawback of a movie like Street Fighter. Was that even successful? But today if they were to make the movie, the beautiful production design and art design and the cool music would have been changed to the crap we have now. I think the movie would be crap if it were made today. And no amount of blood and gore could save it. Plus, they'd probably just use CGI to make the gore anyway.

(About the Mortal Kombat rating) Maybe it's cause people weren't as militant about video game rating systems as they are now. Meaning that teenagers made up a vast majority of the MK fanbase and would be the majority seeing the movie. Just a thought...

MK2 was just plain crap. Some cool fight scenes and music but crap none the less.

i agree with everything you said laz..it would be great to see a gory MK movie if and only if it had no cgi.. i dont understand what makes directors think cgi works..even the best cgi looks like crap to me.. i mean if you wanna use cgi why not make a cartoon movie or an all cgi movie i just searched IMDB and apparently there is one in the works due out in 2010..we can only hope!!! imdb.com/title/tt0293429/

don't get too worked up, T. That movie's been in talks since 1998. They've already had a bunch of release dates for it.
Until I see a trailer or stills, I won't believe it.
By the way, how embarassing was Baraka in Annihilation? He's my favorite character, and they made a joke out of him. It was just some guy in an extremely fake mask.
