any1 else see this movie??? it was alot more brutal and violent then i thought..i didnt know what to expect but overall it was a pretty dark movie..im actually surprised it was in theaters...easily the best TCM to date tho

I've heard good things about it. I just hate the idea of them messing with the back-story so much. They should have kept the Sawyer clan as it was originally, not invented an entirely new family. That's pretty much the reason I still haven't watched it, or the remake.

you should check it out sometime..i can see why you wouldnt like that idea tho..i hated the original though so i dont mind..the remake wasnt great but still better then the original..but this one was way above my expectations

Texas Chainsaw Massacre should not have backstory since the first film was a masterpiece. But to sell tickets, some people have no shame and would do anything. So - I'll get my revenge when those people go to hell and I'm laughing up at them from a fluffier place.

TCM was far from a masterpiece...it was a boring movie where not much happened...maybe back in its day it shocked people..but when i saw it it shocked me how nothing at all happened in the movie...although everytinh tobe hooper directs is pure garbage so it doesnt surprise me

TCM was far from a masterpiece... No, TCM '74 was a masterpiece. it was a boring movie where not much happened... Maybe you thought it was boring. But obviously it is not. maybe back in its day it shocked people..but when i saw it it shocked me how nothing at all happened in the movie... A lot of things happened. So, you're wrong about that too. everything tobe hooper directs is pure garbage Salem's Lot was great. Poltergeist was decent, for a mainstream horror movie- it was outstanding (the scene with the man ripping his face off in the mirror alone was pure horror excellence). The Mangler was cruddy, that's for sure. But admittedly, it was still scary. If you don't think Texas Chainsaw Massacre '74 is a masterpiece, you haven't experienced horror properly. You need to go back and watch it until you see it for the masterpiece it is. |

it may be great to some people i just didnt like it at all..i have seen alot more of the crazy type backwoods family movies done better..and while hooper may have a few decent movies hes a very very overated director..

I agree. I can't argue with a single thing you're saying there.
But it is still a Masterpiece. Oh and... he can't technically be an overrated director if nobody else says he's an amazing horror director. Which nobody does.

well alot of people like his movies...and hes a very well known director..i have seen alot of praise about him..i just find his movies bad or average..his masters of horror episodes were terrible too

Texas Chainsaw Massacre was one of the top 3 finest horror films of the 1970's and Salem's Lot is without exception the scariest TV-movie of all time. That is not something to sneeze at. Those are huge accomplishments. After that, yeah, the guy's stuff is not very strong. I wouldn't argue about that. But, really... he's at least on par with some of the biggest North American horror directors. |

Alright here's my take on a couple of points:
- I did, and still do, think TCM is friggin' great! I've seen few, if any, horror flicks that come close to creating an atmosphere like Hooper did there. For me that's what's makes it such a masterpiece - it creeps out & scares people without HAVING to be very graphic.
- Tobe Hooper is overrated. He knocked it outta the park with TCM, but he's never come close to recapturing what he accomplished with that film. Salem's Lot - Ok / Poltergeist - Ok, but we all know who REALLY put their stamp on that film / The Mangler - I actually am one of the few that really enjoyed it. But it's nothing on par with TCM. I also want to mention 'The Funhouse.' Kinda fun, but like The Mangler, it's nothing close to TCM.
- I think comparing him to Carpenter is a good idea, Laz. I've always felt those two's careers mirrored each other greatly. They both started out with a bang, but haven't ever really recreated it. In fact, much of their legend status as directors only exist because of those early successes. Without them, they'd probably just be considered better than average. If I had to give one the edge I'd give it to Hooper. Only because I like TCM 10 times better than Halloween. But that's just my taste. Most people have an eternal hard-on for Halloween. I'm just not one of them. But I do think it's one of the most important and influential additions the genre has ever had. So I do respect it. I think the same should be said of TCM. Whether you like it or not, there are literally at least 50 horror movies (if not, more) that never would have been made if the directors had not been inspired by, or copying TCM.
- My first thought of TCM: The Beginning, was that it never should have been made. The addition of a backstory pissed me off as well. I vowed never to see it. But recently I've changed my mind and plan on giving it a chance. The reason? Well, I felt the same way when they remade The Hills Have Eyes. But after seeing that remake and really liking what they did, I've decided to give TCM: The Beginning a chance. The key word there is CHANCE. Because I've seen some other remakes of classics like Black XMAS and came away VERY PISSED OFF!

^^^i wouldnt even see it as a backstory to the original...more of a backstory to the remake..since it uses some of the same characters..and yea i realize the original and remake are supposed to be the same thing but still i see them as 2 whole diff movies..the begining worked because it was dark and brutal...and made leatherface mean and nasty the way he should be..

I kinda liked him dumb. In the original you almost feel sorry for the freak 'cuz he's not much more than an errand boy for the rest of the family. But in this movie if he's more evil that's ok too. It's kinda like comparing Jason to Freddy. Their personalities are different, but both are likable and fun.

Yeah, that's how I'm able to like both the original and remake of The Hills Have Eyes. It's the same story, but tone-wise they're quite different. Same with Black XMAS, except the remake is just plain stupid and poorly made. But I'll be sure to give TCM: The Beginning a fair shake.

The original is friggin' great. Not a lot of blood or gore, but you have to remember it when it was made. IMO it was TRULY the first slasher film. Not Halloween (that's why I'm not ga-ga over it like everyone else is.). I'll go to my grave believing that. As far as the remake goes...........AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE! Seriously, you're not missing anything at all. It's basically the same type of horror (if you can call it that) as a movie like 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', etc. Pure crap. It's only "scary" or "cool" to the teenyboppers that have yet to experience any REAL horror. If you must see it, go ahead. Just don't say I didn't warn you! |

^^ I know, those are the same reasons I decided to check it out. I thought it'd be kinda like the remake of The Hills Have Eyes: same storylines, great modern gore. It does have more gore, but it's nothing special or even close to what the previews lead you to believe. They tried to change the story (why?) and failed miserably. In fact, there really isn't a story. The whole movie struggles, fumbles, and fails completely to make any sense at all. In fact, the storyline fits more to Halloween 2 than Black XMAS. Plus there's way too much lame-ass flashbacks about Billy being seduced by his mother (think the storyline from Psycho to the extreme) and from there it just gets stupid. In fact this movie can't decide if it's remaking Halloween, Psycho, Black Christmas, or The Incredible Hulk (when you see Billy, you'll see what I mean). Plus, the characters have no depth whatsoever and their logic makes Friday the 13th victims look like geniuses. Put it this way, if I had to choose between this movie and Squirm, I'd choose Squirm. At least I can laugh at Squirm. This movie just makes you want to punch yourself in the neck for wasting 90 minutes of your life watching it.
