Haven't seen Inside yet. But after the Triangle of Shit from France known as - Irreversible, Calvaire, and Haute Tension... I'm not giving the French another chance. I also have it on good authority than Frontiers is a piece of shit too, worse than Haute Tension - and that's SAYING A LOT.

check that one out mal, that one and I Stand Alone. Both are done by the demented French writer/director Gaspar Noe. I promise that both will make you feel dirty like few movies can.

I feel less than fresh already...
Well boys, I'm 2 for 2 this weekend.
The Ruins- Friggin' awesome. Only complaint: I didn't like the survivor(s). Great gore and not too long of a wait till the next scene.Might even read the book someday... 8/10

Both are done by the demented French writer/director Gaspar Noe. I promise that both will make you feel dirty like few movies can. So? That's not actually a qualification for great horror. Nor is it even really much of a bonus.

Alright, I realize I didn't "make my point" well. They don't even feel like horror movies. I guess the style of horror has pretty much changed altogether. But so has the feel. Nothing even tries to be scary. And these French films are worse because they think they're so extreme. Yeah, right. Extremely boring and an extreme waste of time. Anyway, the point of all of this was to say they're trying to reinvent horror. To change it all for the purpose of money and a quick shot at fame because they know how many stupid fucking little... well they used to be gorehounds, now the term has changed since we're way past the days of people just talking about how cool and gory 1980's zombie movies were. Now, everyone is into retarded foreign torture films. Little unimportant "horror review" sites will praise any stupid little piece of shit as long as women get naked and it looks like Saw and there are stupid torture scenes.

hey but didn't you like Hostel?! look allz i'm saying is that this decade's horror movies can't easily be lumped together. There have been some great gems but also some terrible crap, like every decade of horror. I agree that it isn't as good as past decades overall, but it isn't much worse. as for french horror, i guess we will agree to disagree.... or at least I WILL!

how did my board attract the shorter, fatter gay version of ebert to it, SOMEDBODY TELL ME!!?? Told you before, I'm not overweight anymore, retard. Did someone forget to put the straw in your mouth so you can suck up your non-solid food this morning, Forrest Gump? Man, you sure like to insult people. Do we make fun of your Harry Potter collection? I do not collect Harry Potter. I collect Horror DVDs. What made you think I was a Harry Potter fan? Those movies are for people who like CGI and movies with people like Dakota Fanning in them. hey but didn't you like Hostel?! No. I've told you at least 4 times, I didn't like Hostel. I don't like Hostel. It's not a movie for people to like. It's not supposed to be a fun movie that people can just sit and watch easily. Nor is it supposed to be an extreme gorefest either. Isn't that weird? Kind of like most of the greatest horror films of the decades before now... When you have a hard subject in the horror genre, like rape, torture, serial killing - that sort of thing, it's very hard to make a horror movie about it work and it won't work frequently. It's not the style of Hostel that makes it work. It's the social relevance and intensely important themes of the movie. None of the other torture movies ever addressed the subject of cultural, social, moral, ethical desensitization this well. I respect Hostel and appreciate it because of how good it is. Not LIKE. There is a difference. You need to start realizing that. look allz i'm saying is that this decade's horror movies can't easily be lumped together. Pretty much- yeah they can. You just don't seem to be aware of HOW they can because you've clearly removed yourself from recognizing the glaring, blazing similarities. Probably to keep yourself from feeling the pain of how this genre is suffering. Which is fine. At least you've got a coping mechanism. I kind of admire it. But on another level, I know that if the genre keeps getting represented the way it is now and nothing changes- it'll be completely dead soon. There have been some great gems but also some terrible crap, like every decade of horror. I agree that it isn't as good as past decades overall, but it isn't much worse. It's not just worse, it's A LOT worse! The 1990's had something that this decade doesn't. It had DEEP psychological insight, INTELLIGENCE, AMBITION. Even in a film as unfortunately schlocky and novelty-like as Tales from the Hood, they POWERFULLY dealt with social issues. They did it with 1/5TH the seriousness movies like Saw think they have. In an attempt to hopefully (though I don't know what runs through these idiots' minds of the filmmakers today) reflect how dark and serious our times are socially, politically, religiously... Horror films today have by and large removed all art and personality from the films, do everything pretty much half-assed, and all the films share the exact same atmosphere. By over 98%!!! That's an alarming rate! These people think they are making a statement by taking all the art and personality out of the films and making them dull, boring, and all the same - that it can achieve what thrillers can. Horror today are just quasi-brutal thrillers with no point. Even the zombie films look like torture films. Same camerawork, same pacing, same editing. No other decade had every horror movie coming out feel exactly the same. That's why this decade is the worst. There is nothing to these new movies that we haven't seen before in dozens of other movies just like them. as for french horror, i guess we will agree to disagree.... or at least I WILL! The French are still the worst exporters of ALLEGED "horror" coming out this decade. They suffer from the same exact problem that we do in America, but they make it all sexual. Again, no point to it. And what entertainment value can we get from that anyway? With no art and no intelligence - the movies are just crap that again, thinks it's extreme.

well its tough to make a completely original movie nowadays, and you you want one of them like i have said you need to become more forgiving and watch low budget movies, they may not be perfect but given the budget you cant expect some big hollywood polished movie

you like hostel laz. that's the truth. admit it. What did I like about it? I told you - there is a difference to liking something and appreciating it. I usually only like parts of movies anyway. it's shit and you like a little shit in your coffee. I don't drink coffee. And did you ever tell me why you THINK Hostel is a bad movie? You probably should. It's a good movie, probably not great but only because it ripped off Marathon Man a little bit. But it's good because it was made with thought about how the characters should be set up for the slaughter. Instead of just showing them being tortured, they actually give us a good reason why they could or should be tortured. Face it - in the world of torture films, they're all fucking pointless. Except Hostel. Almost all the victims in the first movie are men, the film exposes bad American behaviors and punishes the young people for it. It's about SO much it's ridiculous. It's always going to get points for that. Is the reason you're pissed off because you think the director is saying people like you should be tortured? You saw yourself in the main characters? You want to do whatever you want and be morbidly reckless and irresposible too? Or do you think the movie is a weak attempt to try to show us 9/11 fears in the form of people being tortured? What's your problem? Because the movie is good. And hell, you liked Haute Tension - so you like movies with no forward-moving, linear plot. But at least Hostel had honorable subtext. If you do bad things, something bad will happen to you. That's the message of Hostel. The message of Haute Tension is that lesbians are all murderers, deep down. You are actually saying Haute Tension is good and Hostel is bad? You're fucked up. But then, you know that. and no the decade can't be lumped together. every year there are plenty of great horror movies as well as bad ones. Really?? Name me ANY of the "great" horror movies to come out this year? August '07 - August '08. Right now. I'll bet you can't.

some truly great recent horror movies are The Mist and Poultrygeist. Hostel didn't have any 'subtext' either fucknut, it was just a bunch of violence. Eli Roth saying to the KNB effects guys "do this, okay now do this, that was cool. Now do this!" If you do bad things, bad things happen to you is completely not true in many instances in life. That is a stupid philosophy and has nothing to do with the movie. Also there is no way to say what is torture-porn and what isn't. People just use that term when they are offended by what they see.

some truly great recent horror movies are The Mist and Poultrygeist. Yeah right. First of all, Mist = CGI. That's a cop out. So the movie will always be a lesser film because of the CGI. I've seen clips. The CGI looks like CGI, it's obvious, they didn't spend enough money to hide it. If the movie is about a monster and the monster looks like a computer... the movie won't work. No matter how good the story and characterization is. The only reason people are gushing about Poultrygeist is that it's a new Lloyd Kaufman movie and they miss stuff like Terror Firmer and Tromeo & Juliet. But newsflash - those movies sucked. So in actuality, Poultrygeist sucks too and people just like its' style. But if it's not a fully-formed great horror movie... it doesn't count. It has to have more than Lloyd Kaufman has ever directed before because his horror movies suck. Hostel didn't have any 'subtext' either fucknut, it was just a bunch of violence. Okay - first of all, this quote is taken from a person who defended Saw. And the point of my saying this is not because Saw was violent, but because it completely sucked and only a dimwit defends it anyway. So, what exactly would YOU know about subtext?! You probably thought Saw was full of it. It was full of something alright - SHIT. So, you clearly don't know what goes inside these movies, again Haute Tension is more proof of that. If you do bad things, bad things happen to you is completely not true in many instances in life. EXACTLY!! Get it yet? Look at all the greatest social statements made in horror. Did any of them change the world? No. What they did was POINT OUT things that are wrong. Hostel is clearly saying who these guys are and what they're doing is wrong. And punishes them for it. You didn't get that??? It was kind of obvious! And that's at least a good thing because people keep pointing out in the media, with words - how bad things are in pop culture and how dumb and insensitive and reckless people are today, especially young people. The message isn't getting through with words. Someone has to use visuals. And Roth did it, and managed to portray the characters as very morally bankrupt assholes. They got what they asked for. Whether they deserved it or not, they didn't know that's what they signed on for. It works on at least 2 levels, yet at the same time, pointing out that nobody wants to be tortured. It doesn't matter if it's true to life, because it's still true that what they did in the movie was wrong and indicative of sick tendancies in young people today. Were you paying attention at all??? They went to the country to do drugs, they talked about it relentlessly, they use women (prostitutes too) like they were toys, they GLADLY get in fights in clubs, are completely disrespectful of everyone in this foreign country, call everyone "gay" or "fags," cheat on their girlfriends (at least one of them had a girlfriend back in the U.S.), and expect that there's no consequence for all these things. That is MILES more than any of the Saw movies had to offer!!! It's CONTINENTS-vastly superior and actually has a point. The Saw movies don't. So now what do you have to say? That is a stupid philosophy and has nothing to do with the movie. It has EVERYTHING to do with the movie, brainiac. You just refuse to believe it. You clearly have only seen the movie once and for whatever reason weren't paying attention. Right off the bat when I saw the movie, I knew there was a reason the characters were acting the way they were! It's not because Eli Roth writes characters that are just like him. It's because he knows these things he has them doing at least make them self-focused. And that alone shows us why people keep doing fucked up things in society - they don't care about anyone else. And they don't think before they choose to do what they do. They act on first instinct and the movie's saying there's something wrong with them for being the kind of people who have instincts like these! And again, look at the culture today. Exactly how are people being punished for saying and doing the extremely hateful things they do. Look at the GOVERNMENT! Listen to Bush! Look at the lawmakers! Tell me they aren't as selfish and insensitive as these young kids, and how immature Bush is. Look at AMERICA and tell me all the differences between the guys in Hostel and the guys in countless Reality-TV shows! That's the point. Now, I know Eli Roth isn't much better than these guys. But he does care about people and he does have common sense. I know that for a fact. He just lost that after Hostel when he did the sequel because money fucked him up. But the filmmaker doesn't have to be perfect for the film to be good. Also there is no way to say what is torture-porn and what isn't. People just use that term when they are offended by what they see. Wake up, Shunty - Saw and Hostel weren't that violent. Neither was Wolf Creek (going on the torture films I've actually seen). I don't know if all these other films to come out in their wake are actually that violent - but the point is, it's not about being offended by VIOLENCE. If what I am counts me as a Liberal (I'm very conflicted on my own political beliefs), it's important to also tell the truth - I'm not offended by violence. It's what the movie is saying about the way it's conducted that is a problem. The justification for the entire film itself! And guess what? Hostel had an intelligent, calculating killer (The Dutch Businessman), and off in the distance where it's not explained - there is also a network of people organizing these murders (I'm completely disregarding the sequel, which is only logical - the sole reason for that film's existence was to switch the 3 main victims' gender). It didn't bullshit out of it like Saw did. Not only did it have a good helping of very well done violence, that itself managed to get a good psychological reaction from the audience (leading to its' overwhelming popularity and box office success / it can't be argued that the film's key murder scene didn't get to people), but it also served a point. A real point. The movie didn't just bump into the torture scenes! It knew exactly what it was doing. The reason for Hostel's existence is more than Saw's. Saw is just a rip-off and the things it's ripping off are clear. The whole point of the movie, its' "sense" of morality, the plot, the killer - all stolen from other movies. Hostel had a point and an idea and was socially relevant, but felt it had to pad the murder scene with the Dutch Businessman with some message. The #1 flaw of Hostel is that the dialogue in the blond guy's torture scene was completely derivative of Marathon Man. But that can be easily ignored. Saw is such a blatantly unintelligent, unambitious, cheap music video styled / C.S.I. feeling piece of shit. Eli Roth saying to the KNB effects guys "do this, okay now do this, that was cool. Now do this!" Well, he did get better FX out of them for Hostel than they did for Cabin Fever! ;D

you've seen clips from The Mist you say? So you haven't even seen it! Your entire argument falls apart right there. also, i know saw didn't have any subtext because movies don't have to to be good. it was entertaining to me, so therefore i liked it.
